Summer Reading, 2014!

Our Summer Reading Program kicks off today!

Research shows that children can lose up to three months of reading progress over the summer months, and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect.  Research also shows that children must read or be read to for twenty to thirty minutes a day to improve their reading skills.

This year we will be challenging every student at Berlin Memorial School to read (or be read to) for 750 minutes this summer!  That's just 15 minutes a day, five days a week.  We are very excited to partner with Reading-Rewards.com to make keeping track of those summer reading minutes more interesting.  Your child will come home with a letter that explains what we are doing, and how to keep track of minutes read.

We’ve also created a Suggested Summer reading list for students.  You can find that list by clicking here.

Have a great summer, and happy reading!

Feasibility Study - Regionalization
 Hello,
The School Committee has recently voted to have a feasibility study completed to review the potential of regionalization from grades prek-12.  They sent out a grant request to CMRPC (Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission) and were approved this request.  Janet Pierce is the contact person from CMRPC who is completing this study and will provide the results and recommendations to the School Committee.  As part of this study, Ms. Pierce has sent a survey request and has asked that the school department distribute it to the community.    The posting is not only on this website, but has been sent out to parents and staff.  CMRPC is planning on getting this information in the local newspapers as well.  If you should have any questions regarding this study, please do not hesitate to contact Ruth Blandin, Chairperson of the Berlin-Boylston Regional School Committee via email at:  rblandin@bbrsd.org.

On behalf of the School Committee, I thank you for your participation.
Sincerely,
Nadine Ekstrom
Superintendent of Schools
